I had 5 interviews on Monday for a new job -- same company, different position. Candidates were weeded out before even making it to the interview round, so as far as I know there are only 3 people that were interviewed. I think there is a round 2 of interviews though, so I should know something by next week.

Also, I'm getting Lasik tomorrow at the Cleveland Clinic. I was there for a while today getting tests done to make sure everything looks good, which it does. Hopefully by Friday morning I'll be able to see 20/20 without the need of glasses.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-44820216210306220532010-08-28T12:15:00.000-04:002010-08-28T12:15:57.122-04:00Someone needs to step up in the NBA and call a spade a spade. The agents are obviously tampering with players. Players are tampering with other players. Still other players are demanding trades while under contract. Agents and players are working with each other to try to navigate themselves to only destinations they want. It's completely out of control and can definitely go a long way towards killing the sport.

In this regard the NFL has it right. They have franchise tags that prevent certain players from demanding moves. They can simply void contracts for any reason. Sure, in some ways that's too slanted to the owners, but there has to be a sweet spot in the middle. I really like the idea of a franchise tag in the NBA. The player will get their money (guaranteed in the top 5 avg salary or something) and the team will keep their star.
Not to mention the fans can actually root for someone without fear of them demanding a trade or orchestrating player movement to certain other teams.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-60210269654298077082010-08-16T10:08:00.000-04:002010-08-16T10:08:48.751-04:00Just got back from a weeks vacation in the Outer Banks -- Nags Head specifically. Took Reagan in the ocean for the first time. She liked the sand and the waves lapping at her feet. She also hung out in the pool for a while almost every day. She's not scared of the water at all, which is good. We also have some really good pictures of her in her vast array of swimsuits and rash guards.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-16603792287292735892010-08-03T22:24:00.000-04:002010-08-03T22:24:17.344-04:00We've been house hunting recently. It's a great time to buy. Just not for us. Work timing issues getting in the way.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-22337029705355444432010-07-28T12:59:00.000-04:002010-07-28T12:59:11.440-04:00The Cavs continue to take shots with players who had ability but have failed to play up to their talent level. At this point I think that's the best option available. Maybe they strike out. Maybe they hit the jackpot. Either way, what can they really do?

Mediocrity is the death knell of a franchise. A team can recover from being horrible by drafting well. A team can continue to be great by luring free agents. A team that's just out of the playoffs or just into the playoffs can't really improve via either method though, and like it or not, that's the position the Cavs are currently in.

They do possess a large trade exception, but I expect them to hang on to that until after next season.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-48027828831696989652010-07-20T18:44:00.000-04:002010-07-20T18:44:35.043-04:00Still settling in after being out of town this past weekend. My mom and Lindsays sister were here last week and her mom is here this week. It's nice to have visitors but it will also be nice to be home for a weekend without visitors AND no weddings to go to. We don't have another wedding until next week. Huzzah! That'll be 3 weddings in 4 weeks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-55735182797978790622010-07-16T16:40:00.002-04:002010-07-16T16:43:29.809-04:00The full page ad never appeared, and my guess is that his "team" heard of the Amare Stoudamire ad in Phoenix and decided to pull it (if in fact it was ever real to begin with.)

Whatever, let's get on with it. I like the Cavs idea of taking chances on talented players who haven't lived up to their potential. It's like a lottery ticket. Chances are, they won't hit it big, but it's worth the shot. Prime example being Rashad McCants. It costs them $100 per day to have him on their summer league team and maybe he makes the team and maybe even becomes a starter. He has the physical tools, just needs to put it together mentally too.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-23406706616098312532010-07-15T21:08:00.002-04:002010-07-15T21:15:45.538-04:00LeBron supposedly will take out a full page ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer tomorrow. My guess is that it goes like one of these two ways.

First (and much more likely):

Dear Cleveland Fans,

My PR people have written you this letter from me because my reputation is in the toilet right now after my distasteful informercial last week. If I ever want to salvage my brand anywhere outside of Miami I need to "reconcile" with my hometown, whom I treated like the temple priest in the Temple of Doom and ripped out your still beating heart. Sorry about that. The truth is I just woke up on the morning of July 9 and decided that Miami would be fun. That's the truth. I swear. I never premeditated anything with Mike Miller during the NBA finals. I never told Wade and Bosh that I wanted to play with them last year. I just woke up and thought, "Hmm, Miami sounds nice." I never meant to hurt your feelings. Akron will always be my hometown and I'll do you proud. What? Oh. I mean Cleveland. I love Cleveland. Go Cowboys! I mean Yankees! No, no, go Cleveland State! Yay Ohio!

Sincerely,

Anonymous Nike PR rep

Second (and less likely):

Dear Cleveland,

You suck. I'm better than you.

P.S. Go Heat!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-38041246827529696232010-07-13T21:16:00.002-04:002010-07-13T21:21:14.030-04:00Zydrunas Ilgauskas has left the Cavs for the Miami Heat. That's unfortunate, but understandable. He called the Cavs owner and GM today to personally tell them the news. He said he's been in the league for 15 years and wants a last chance at a championship. I can't fault the guy. Sure, I'd prefer him to be anywhere else, but still. He did everything the city and the team ever asked of him. He also said that Cleveland is his home and he's only changing his work place. He wants to come back and work for the organization when it's all done.

Talk about a different way to leave compared to that other guy. Un-named player will get booed ferociously and Z will get a standing ovation. That's my prediction anyway.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-25999972146456464002010-07-10T09:22:00.003-04:002010-07-10T09:32:39.018-04:00It seems to me that, right now at least, LeBron leaving the Cavs isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The reason for that is the way he left; utterly destroying and past connection he had with Cleveland. That actually made it easier to move on.

Would the Cavs be better with him? Absolutely they would. He's a terrific basketball player. The size of his ego dwarfs the amount of talent he has though, and that's something I never realized before. Were the Cavs enablers of that? Yes. Were the fans? Yes. I just never saw the entire scope of it until now.

So, rumor has it that the Cavs will get 2 future 1st round picks and 2 future 2nd round picks as well as a $14.5 million trade exception. Unfortunately, the picks are all at a point in time when Miami will be among the best teams in the league and therefore very late first and second round. Those assets are better than getting nothing though. The trade exception can be used to immediately trade for any single player making up to $14.5 million next year. That means in theory they could trade that straight up for Chris Paul and only give up the trade exception to get him. Will that particular trade happen? There's no chance of it, but they could get someone like Al Jefferson who would be a good pickup for the Cavs as they have little to no depth at the center spot now.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-68841314580090530102010-07-08T11:24:00.003-04:002010-07-08T11:27:08.721-04:00The drive.
The shot.
The fumble.
The move.
The decision.

Add another dagger to the heart of Cleveland sports fans. If of course, tonight goes down like I expect it to. With LeBron leaving for Miami, or Chicago, or New York, or New Jersey, or wherever else he feels he best fits in.

The saddest part is that the franchise that did everything it could to win and win now has limited itself to being a spectator for what happens tonight. They're handcuffed and over the cap.

Regardless of what happens, I'm a Cavs fan and while I root for the name on the back, it's only because of the name on the front.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-36677753449854771682010-07-07T12:54:00.001-04:002010-07-07T12:55:24.842-04:00Happy anniversary to me and my wife. Has my desire to post more frequently changed? I guess we'll have to see. Was it some social experiment to withdraw from blogging for a year? No. Or yes. Whichever.

A lot has happened in the past year. Details? Forthcoming. Or not. There's no telling.

Will anyone notice this in a short period of time? I think one person will, but if more than that do I will be very surprised.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-34701267130940845832009-07-02T08:50:00.002-04:002009-07-02T08:55:17.486-04:00So now California is "too big to fail" according to the government. What a terrible precedent they set when they allowed any institution to classified as such.

There's a reason that one of the definitions of failure is "a condition of being bankrupt by reason of insolvency." Hmm, what's that sound like? Oh, how about a dozen financial companies and a half dozen states.

Make them feel the pain of recovery. They are the ones that screwed themselves up. Let them fix it. When you continue to bail out people who make the same mistakes over and over and over again, they simply don't learn. Why is that? It's because there is no penalty for them.

If I said, "Hey, I want a new car. Let's charge it. Oh sorry, I can't afford that Rolls Royce anymore. I'll tell you what. I'll keep the car, and you can bail me out. How do you like that plan?"

How do you think that would go over. I think the answer couldn't be more obvious.

For the last time: NOTHING IS TOO BIG TO FAIL!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-41216347598020495182009-07-01T16:04:00.002-04:002009-07-01T16:08:43.635-04:00According to this article in Forbes, if you're a married couple with 2 kids, it costs more for you to live in Cleveland than it does in Chicago. Does that strike anyone else as odd?

Other cities that it's cheaper to live in include Orlando, San Antonio, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Austin, and St Louis.

If that's true then it's no wonder that people are leaving Cleveland in droves. Not only does the weather suck, but it's apparently expensive to live here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-64723199710883310952009-06-30T22:25:00.002-04:002009-06-30T22:29:11.007-04:00Our rental property is becoming one headache after another. Pretty uneventful for having been out for 3 weeks. That's a good thing.

This weekend was going very well until last night. I did something to tweak my foot and felt a burning in my arch, as if something had stung me there. I took it easy and it happened a few more times, but so far no burning feeling today. It definitely hurts more than it did though. Especially on the heel, where the bruise is. I was back on crutches while at work though and that seemed to help. Now I'll just try to keep it elevated and see how that goes.

Ah, the boring story of an injured foot.

I could sell it for millions. It's gold, Jerry! Not only do they need to fill a lot of spots, but they were exposed badly in the Magic series and need upgrades. The problem is there's not much out there period, let alone upgrades.

The Cavs have the following free agents this year.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Joe Smith
Wally Szczerbiak
Anderson Varejao
Lorenzen Wright

Z and Varejao can opt out but Z would be insane to do so and it looks like Varejao wants to test the market so expect him to opt out on July 1st. If he can find a team willing to pay him $10 million per year then he's gone.

Szczerbiak looks close to done. He'll get nowhere near his $13+ million contract ever again. I think he'll be lucky to get $5+. He's a useful one trick offensive guy to have, but his defense is non-existent. He tries, but sometimes it's painful to watch.

Joe Smith is a good guy to have around, especially if you can get him around the $3 mill/year mark. I'd like to see him come back for next season. He was non-existent in the playoffs though.

Wright was no factor whatsoever and was merely a bench spot filler.

On top of those guys, Ben Wallace is talking about retiring. He's not close to the defender he once was. He has never been an offensive option. Now, with injuries, his body is close to giving out as well. In any case, it's a very long shot that he's with the Cavs next year. His expiring contract is too much of a prize, especially if he retires and takes a buyout. His contract give the Cavs the ability to trade for a $16 million guy for what could be a buyout price of around $7 million. That's a big savings in todays market when nearly all teams are looking to cut costs.

So after all those guys leave or potentially leave, the Cavs bigs will consist of Z and two rookies. Great. That means they'll need to really do some work in the offseason to rebuild the roster.

Here are some guys I think they should target. I'm not willing to break the bank for any of them, with the possible exception being the guy sitting at my top spot.

1. David Lee - He's young and can be a double-double machine. He isn't that great defensively, but then again the Knicks weren't exactly playing any defense anyway, so he might be better in a better system.

2. Charlie Villanueva - He can score the ball but is a soft defender. He has the desired height, and his ability to create his own shot is a plus, but as the Cavs bigs were exposed in the Orlando series, the ultimate need is for a big that can shoot AND defend. Those aren't exactly easy to come by. If Villanueva can ramp up his defensive effort, then he'd be a good fit.

3. Jermaine O'Neal - A very good defender. Has the height and size that the Cavs need. Could play the 4 if the Cavs went big with him and Z. No longer a go to guy offensively. Settles for outside shots too often. He's just the type of player that the Cavs need though when they play a bigger team.

4. Shawn Marion - He's an on the ball defensive stopper. He can play the 3 or the 4, but certainly isn't an ideal fit at starting power forward. He'd be a nice off the bench guy that could pair up with LeBron when the Cavs go small. He makes way way too much money though, and in order for the Cavs to get him Marion would need to be willing to cut at least 50% off his salary.

5. Marcin Gortat - A big white guy to back up the other big white guy. Would be a good backup center who could play 15-20 minutes a game. Doesn't have ideal size as he'd benefit for more muscle to put on top of is 240 lb frame. Has the necessary height and energy that the Cavs need from a bench guy though.

6. Shelden Williams - A pure energy guy. If Varejao goes elsewhere, then Williams could replace him. Not a great offensive player, but a pretty good rebounder. Typically a 15 minute/game guy who will give you about 5 and 5 in that time.

Realistically I think they'll get Villanueva and some scraps and that won't be enough. I'd love for them to pull off some miracle and get Chris Bosh, but that's as likely as Kobe Bryant signing with the Clippers.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126503.post-35707288021807538262009-06-02T23:36:00.001-04:002009-06-02T23:36:25.117-04:00I'm too immobilized to write about all the changes the Cavs need to make this offseason.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
